1. More of a black thing BUT...parents not all kids are kings and queens. I am all about uplifting our children and motivating them to see their worth and full potential. However, somebody has to be a peasant! Respect is not just for royalty. You're out here raising a bunch of King Richard's and Henry VIII's and I'm not amused. It is ok to be the butcher, baker or candlestick maker...we need peasants and you should be respected because you are a human not because you are a "king" or "queen".
2. Minority children, specifically black, are being over suspended and mislabeled as special education across the nation. BUT if the school district is overwhelmingly of any minority of course they would be the ones suspended. They are the only ones there! If a school is 100% black, I bet $1 Billion that all the suspensions will be black. Is that discrimination? NO
2a. Some of these kids are bad as.....that's why they get suspended. Then they are repeat offenders, committing multiple level 1,2 and 3 offenses. I hate playing a quota game on suspensions, when the numbers justify. It creates chaos to have to deal with tiers of badness because you can't suspend really bad kids due to Mrs. Swanisborg writing up all the black kids in Rhode Island due to cultural differences.
2b. I understand the plight and can see the benefits of meditation, mediation, restorative justice practices, etc but that requires time and staff, which we simply do not have at the schools that need it. So please come and volunteer at a school and get the ball rolling.
2c. Denying your child special education services because "too many black boys" are labeled is not good parenting. We're in a conference for the umpteenth time about your child. Never have held a convention in these meetings about national epidemic, we are talking about YOUR CHILD. Then demanding that your child receive 504 accommodations which are minimal at best is such a disservice to a child.
2d. Think about minority communities...lead paint, lead pipes, poor soil, food deserts, etc....we are not labeled special education because we are dumb. There are environmental factors that contribute. Fix those instead of trying to picket in my meeting about the discrepancy in these labels.
