July 12, 2018 Summer School Edition
I finally got paid and had a vacation so now I can post.
1. Summer school never sneaks up on people...your child was failing or borderline failing the entire year.
1a. No, I don't care about your family reunion/vacation/child going to their other parents house...I'm sorry you have to pay for it...take up this issue with your child for not doing what they needed to do during the school year and messing up the family funds/vacation.
2. Having to pay for summer school has it's pros and cons and can negatively affect some students but for those bad ones it catches...amen.
3. Taking an hour off of the school day and calling it summer school is for the birds....4 hours max...and only the subject kids need.
4. Paying me for summer school in one lump sum...AFTER summer school is over so I can be taxed to death is cruel and unusual punishment.
5. Asking for additional work from summer school teachers is......there are a plethora of online programs that parents can use AND the library is free.
5b. That might seem like a facetious statement BUT learning is a partnership and parents should utilize resources outside of what the school has to offer especially if the child was unsuccessful during the school year. Often a schools resources are finite so a teacher may have used everything during the year.
6. I made it 4 years without having to teach summer school but then ya know life happened..my summer is gone so I'm not sure if it was worth it..this check is nice though..
7. Finally, summer school is too short for any remediation. Evidence shows that retention does nothing for the student. Education has to be done differently.
